Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Christopher Cox has named a Los Angeles lawyer to be the SEC’s chief legal officer, according to a report released Tuesday by Bloomberg News.

Brian Cartwright, head of Latham & Watkins LLP’s U.S. public company practice, is expected to replace Giovanni Prezioso, who announced on Nov. 30 he would leave the agency by the end of the year.

Cox, who joined the SEC in August, worked with Cartwright briefly in the early 1980s while they were both at Latham, according to Bloomberg News.

In his new role, Cartwright will serve as the SEC’s general counsel, assessing new legal rules and advising on civil actions filed by the agency for alleged securities violations. The SEC is the federal regulator of stocks and other corporate securities.

Cartwright, who joined Latham in 1982 and is now a member of the firm’s executive committee, has advised clients on securities matters while serving as partner of the firm. He serves in the Los Angeles office and his clients include Amgen Inc. and Capstone Turbine Corp.
