The Walt Disney Co. announced the election of two new independent board members Friday: former Starbucks Corp. Chief Executive Orin C. Smith and former Procter & Gamble Chief Executive John E. Pepper Jr.

The two new directors will join the company board in January. With their addition, 11 out of Disney’s 13 board members will be considered independent.

The company also announced that former U.S. Sen. George Mitchell, who had been slated to retire at the end of his term early next year, will remain board chairman for another year while the board of directors conducts a search for his successor.

Smith, 63, served as president and CEO of Starbucks Corp. for five years before retiring earlier this year, and is a director of Nike Inc. and Washington Mutual.

Pepper, 67, was chairman and CEO of Procter & Gamble from 1995 until 2002, stepping down after 38 years of service, and serves as a director of Boston Scientific Corp. and Population Services International.
