reported a 7.1 percent dip in comparable store sales in August, which still managed to beat analysts’ estimates of a 7.6 percent decrease. A year ago, Hot Topic stores open at least a year saw same-store sales fall 8.7 percent. Total sales for the month ending Aug. 27 rose to $70.7 million, a 6 percent rise over the year-earlier period. The City of Industry-based mall retailer said year-to-date sales gained to $372.7 million, a 13 percent increase over the year before.



& #8226; Jacobs Engineering Group Inc.

said a subsidiary company was awarded a one-year, $6.3 million contract extension from the Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District to provide wastewater planning services. Pasadena-based Jacobs is starting the third year of a contract for the district’s long-range master-planning program, which focuses on reducing sanitary sewer overflows and watershed issues. The project is part of St. Louis’ $3.7 billion worth of proposed infrastructure improvements.



& #8226; Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc.

signed an agreement with Pioneer Corp. to allow Pioneer to use the L.A. company’s interactive program guide in consumer electronics products designed for the European market. The new deal builds on an existing agreement reached last year between the two companies, in which Pioneer was granted a license to incorporate the interactive program guide into certain products in North America, Japan and Europe. Pioneer is among more than a dozen consumer electronics manufacturers licensing Gemstar’s interactive program guide for consumer electronics products.
