San Diego Mayor Dick Murphy resigned amid a widening federal probe of his handling of the city’s deficit-ridden pension system, the Associated Press reported.
The surprise announcement comes just months after a bruising re-election battle in which Murphy pulled out a 2,108-vote victory over city councilwoman Donna Frye, who waged a surprisingly strong write-in campaign.
