Gasoline prices in Los Angeles and throughout much of Southern California, after peaking and then hovering near record highs, began inching lower over the past week, the Automobile Club of Southern California said.

The average price for regular self-serve unleaded gasoline in Los Angeles dipped 0.4 cents to $2.619 on Friday from $2.623 one week ago. The price was $2.366 per gallon one month ago, according to the Automobile Club of Southern California.

“Orange County and the Central Coast were the only areas to set new highs this week, but those records were made only by fractions of a cent,” said Auto Club spokesperson Carol Thorp. “Prices in most areas have peaked and now we’re seeing small reductions. It’s likely that the average price of gasoline in Southern California will inch lower over the next couple of weeks.”

The only Southern California area surveyed by AAA to set a new record price over the past week was Orange County, which rose 0.3 cents to $2.605. Still, for the third Friday in a row, the lowest average price in Southern California was in Orange County. The Santa Barbara-Santa Maria-Lompoc area reported the highest average local price, at $2.716, but experienced the largest price drop of the week, down 1.1 cents.

The Weekend Gas Watch monitors the average price of gasoline as of 12:01 a.m., April 22.
