Update: UC Reaches Pact With Unionized Service Workers

The University of California and the union representing 7,300 service workers on nine campuses reached a tentative agreement on a three-year contract Wednesday, six days after a daylong strike that also affected five UC medical centers.

The agreement with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Local 3299 calls for the establishment of a $9 per hour minimum wage for all workers affecting about 600 employees who make less than that amount.

Each worker will also get a $250 one-time payment, raises of 10 percent over the life of the contract, maintenance of full health benefits for those who work at least 1,000 hours per year and more opportunities for job promotions.

The university backed off a demand to make wage increases dependent on funding from the state Legislature, said Faith Raider, a research analyst for the union.

“We feel like the strike paid off,” she said.

The contract covers service workers such as janitors and food workers. Ratification votes on each of the campuses are expected to take place within a month. The contract would be retroactive to Jan. 31, when the previous pact expired.
