California’s unemployment rate fell to a seasonally adjusted 5.4 percent in March from 5.8 percent in February, as the economy added 17,600 non-farm jobs, the state Employment Development Department said Friday.

That dropped the number of new statewide unemployment claims to 40,316 in March from 47,791 in February. There were 46,067 claims in March 2004, when the unemployment rate was 6.4 percent.

In Los Angeles County, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.7 percent in March from 6 percent in February. It was 6.6 percent in March 2004.

The drop in the county unemployment rate was driven by the addition 110,000 new jobs last month, according to a separate payroll survey released Friday by the department.

Non-farm jobs in the state totaled 14.7 million in March.
