Hilton Charms Agents With Speedy Payments

Looking to ingratiate itself with travel agencies, Hilton Hotels Corp. now pays commissions on a weekly basis.

The company said it’s the only large hotel chain to move from a monthly system, with the new payment system used for its 2,300 properties in North America.

“This was in response to the requests of travel agents,” said Andrew Keown, a Hilton spokesman. “Also, of course, this hopefully will make them prefer to book with Hilton.”

Travel agents are responsible for 15 percent to 20 percent of the chain’s bookings on a given night, and get about a 10 percent commission for each booking.

“The faster, the better,” said Barry Noskeau, executive vice president of Altour Interational Inc. in Los Angeles. Wido Schaefer, chief executive of the Los Angeles-based TravelStore Inc., said the move signaled Hilton is paying attention to travel agents, who have often been overlooked with the advent of Internet booking.

“I think they recognize that travel agents still move a considerable amount of market share,” he said.
