LABJ FORUM – The Morning Routine

Some people just aren’t right until they’ve had their first cup of coffee. Others need the paper, or a telephone chat with their mom. Most everyone relies on some sort of morning routine to get the day started in the right direction. So the Business Journal asks:

What are the rituals you absolutely must do before leaving the house in the morning?

I get up and get the paper at my door. Then I change the water in my dog’s dish and feed her. I have to wait for her to finish eating before I can walk her. Her name is Lola. Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets. I open up my laptop and start checking e-mails. I have something to eat. That’s where I get to vary my routine. I have cereal, yogurt, whatever is in the fridge. I check e-mails then take my dog for a walk. I come back, shower and go to work.

I wake up at 7 a.m. I briefly look the paper over, but don’t read it till I get home at night. My mind isn’t in the right place in the morning to be concentrating on news stories. I get a cup of coffee and get ready for work. I drive my kids to school. There’s no variation. We’ve been pretty solid. When you’re dealing with three kids, you have to have a routine or else things can quickly get out of hand.

I get up at different times every day. So I don’t have routine mornings. Regardless of whatever changes in my schedule, I need the morning newspaper, the L.A. Times. I’ve been doing that since college. I also need a cup of tea in the morning. I’m a non-coffee drinker.

I get up at 7 a.m. every day. I take my vitamins in the morning, about six pills. Then I take a piece of paper and write down all these things from my subconscious. My mind is really clear in the morning before I eat anything. I try to get a few of those things done every day. I read the newspaper. If I’m not working out, I take a protein drink for breakfast. When I work out, I have my vitamins and a (protein) bar.

I get up about 6:30 or 7. I always shower. I usually shave. Some days I have breakfast, some days I watch the news. If I have breakfast, it’s always different, cereal or eggs. Most mornings I get my 11-year-old son ready for school, so it depends on how it goes with him. If he does well and gets himself all ready, I have time to watch the news.

I must check my e-mail in the morning. Sometimes I check so early, at about 5:30 or 6, I have to go back to bed. I have clients and vendors in New York. I don’t have to leave until 9:30. If I have a lot to respond to, I flip on TV and switch between CNN and Fox News. Then I’ll flip to local news to see what the traffic’s like. Breakfast varies day to day, but usually I pick up something at work. I’m a late-nighter.
