Port of Los Angeles officials released environmental proposals that could affect ship and rail operators as part of a plan to keep pollution emissions at 2001 levels, the Los Angeles Times reported.

Proposals announced Wednesday include forcing ship engines to lower toxic emissions, powering the port’s rail line with electricity and replacing older trucks with newer models with cleaner burning engines.

While environmentalists and local community representatives welcomed the suggestions, shipping and railroad representatives said they need more time to evaluate the initiatives, saying the port hasn’t determined the cost of the proposals and that legal challenges might prevent some from being adopted, the Times reported.

By 2012, according to a draft report released by port officials, nitrogen oxide emissions could increase by 8,712 tons and particulate matter could climb by 906 tons.
