Daily Breeze, N.Y. Times Shift Press Run to Outside Contractor

After printing its 73,000-circulation paper in-house for more than a century, the Daily Breeze has contracted with Southwest Offset Printing Co. in Gardena to take its press run.

The change, which will come at the cost of 87 production and printing jobs, was made after The New York Times announced that it would stop using the Breeze as the printer of its Southern California editions and move to Southwest on Jan. 1. The Breeze now employs 255 people.

“We knew a year ahead of time The New York Times would be going there,” said Art Wible, publisher of the Torrance-based Daily Breeze, which is owned by La Jolla-based Copley Press Inc.

Its contract to print 55,000 daily copies and 90,000 Sunday copies of The New York Times, which expires Dec. 31, represents 8 percent of the Breeze’s total revenues, Wible said. He would not disclose the dollar value of the contract with the Times or with Southwest, but did say that outsourcing would save more than twice the amount of the lost contract for printing the Times.
