L.A. County Hospital Janitors Vow to Strike

More than 250 janitors working at two Los Angeles County hospitals vowed to walk off their jobs today in a dispute over wages and increased employee-paid health care costs.

The workers, members of Service Employees International Union Local 1877 and are employed by Pedus Service, were expected to strike the Olive View Medical Center and Harbor/UCLA Medical Center at noon.

The job action follows a failed attempt the day before to persuade the L.A. County Board of Supervisors to increase their wages.

Janitors said they can’t afford the increasing costs of health care while making an average of $8.32 per hour, SEIU said in a statement.
