Karyn Baylis was promoted to senior vice president for the Americas at Qantas Airways in Los Angeles. She will be responsible for sales and marketing. Baylis was previously general manager of customer and marketing services for the airline.

Carl Zicarelli was named manager of mainstream marketing for the U.S. region of Korean Air, based in Los Angeles. He will oversee marketing during the company's restructuring program. Zicarelli was most recently general manager of business development for Rosenbluth International Travel.

Cheryl M. Lawton was appointed director of client services at Financial Independence Co., an employee benefits consulting firm in Woodland Hills. She will be responsible for managing benefits marketing and customer service for FIC clients. Lawton was previously a consultant with Strategic HR Services.

Richard R. Orosco was named managing director of Ernst & Young's IRS Practice and Procedures Group in Los Angeles. He will oversee the IRS practice in Southern California, Colorado, Arizona and Hawaii. Orosco was most recently a senior manager in the national tax services office at PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Anne Marie Gillespie was named director of planning at Round 2 Communications, a Los Angeles media buying firm. She will oversee planning and buying for all of the firm's accounts. Gillespie was most recently head of media planning and buying at Montgomery Ward.


Nelson Algaze joined Schlemmer+Kamus +Algaze, an architectural and interior design firm in Long Beach, as a partner. He will be responsible for space planning and project design. Algaze was most recently with P. Patrick Murray.


John G. Ellis was elected president of the Southern California chapter of the Appraisal Institute. Ellis is president of the Ellis Group in Woodland Hills.

William R. Lyon was named executive director of the Free Speech Coalition, a Chatsworth-based trade association for the adult entertainment industry. Lyon was most recently vice president of marketing and business development for Prosona Partners in Chicago.

Banking & Finance

Richard B. Handler and John C. Shaw were promoted to co-presidents and co-chief operating officers at Jefferies Group in Los Angeles. They will be responsible for executing the firm's strategic growth plan. Handler and Shaw were previously executive vice presidents and will continue to focus respectively on high yield and equity sales and trading.

Ellen F. Strauss was named vice president at RNC Capital Management in Los Angeles. She will be responsible for new business development and domestic and international client services. Strauss was previously a vice president with City National Bank in Beverly Hills.

Brett van den Berg was appointed first vice president and manager of Community Bank's Glendale Business Banking Center. He will be responsible for loan and deposit production. Van den Berg was most recently manager at the Huntington Park branch. Also, Joyce Patzold was appointed vice president. She will be responsible for marketing commercial loans and seeking out depositors. Patzold was previously relationship manager at the Burbank office.


John Sprouls was promoted to executive vice president of human resources for the Universal Studios Recreation Group. He will be responsible for all human resource activities. Sprouls was previously senior vice president of administration for Universal Studios Escape in Florida.


Michael Farina was named vice president of operations and engineering at McKibben Communications, a satellite distribution service in Chatsworth. He will be responsible for operations, including signal monitoring and conditional access, as well as installation and maintenance of equipment. Farina was most recently vice president of engineering at Lifetime.

Charles Mauzy was appointed vice president of business development at Altamira Group, a digital imaging software developer in Burbank. He will be responsible for negotiating strategic alliances. Mauzy was most recently vice president of business development at Eye Wire Inc.

Robert J. Melchione was promoted to vice president of sales and marketing for the Americas at Hirose Electric, a Simi Valley-based manufacturer of electronic connectors. He will oversee sales and distribution. Melchione was most recently sales and marketing manager for the firm.


Tom Danis was appointed managing director of Aon Southern California in Los Angeles. He will oversee the Los Angeles, Irvine, Costa Mesa and Riverside offices of the firm. Danis was most recently managing director of Aon in St. Louis.


James J.S. Holmes was made partner at Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold in Los Angeles. He focuses on insurance coverage, bad faith and professional errors and omissions litigation. Holmes was previously special counsel with the firm.

Kenneth N. Russak was named partner at Alschuler Grossman Stein & Kahan in Los Angeles. He specializes in creditors' rights litigation. Russak was previously a partner at Pillsbury Madison & Sutro.


Joseph M. Laws was appointed chief operating officer at Wilbur Curtis Co. in Los Angeles. He will be responsible for operations and increasing efficiency company-wide. Laws was previously chief operating officer for LucasVarity.

Nour-Dean Anakar was named international managing director at, an online sports betting Web site in Los Angeles. He will be responsible for international business development. Anakar was previously senior vice president of International.

Finn Johnson and Jerry Keeney were appointed vice presidents of East and West Coast regional sales respectively for, an online real estate marketplace based in Alhambra. They will be responsible for building and managing the regional sales force and developing customer service teams. Johnson was most recently vice president for Bollerman Development Corp. Keeney was previously managing director at CB Richard Ellis-Hawaii.

Gary Marcotte was appointed chief financial officer at in Pasadena. He will be responsible for financial and operations management, strategic planning and business development. Marcotte was previously chief financial officer at Walt Disney Co. and vice president of Disney Regional Entertainment.

Jon Sherman was named creative producer for, an interactive Internet content producer in Los Angeles. He will be responsible for creating, developing and writing new digital content for the firm. Sherman is also a supervising producer for the television show "Frasier."


Don Groth was named chairman of the youth subcommittee for the Carson/Lomita/Torrance Private Industry Council. He will advise the PIC on youth programs and collaborate with schools and city, state and federal agencies to provide youth employment and career resources. Groth was formerly principal of Carson High School.

Steve Klappholz was named executive director of development for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in North Hollywood. He will assist with fund raising. Klappholz was previously a fund raiser for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Lisa M. Watson was appointed executive director of the Downtown Women's Center, a drop-in facility and residence for mentally ill or elderly homeless women in Los Angeles. She will be responsible for daily operations and management of the 47-unit residence building. Watson was most recently assistant executive director of programs and development at the Glendale YWCA.

Sally J. Thompson was appointed president and chief executive at the Children's Museum in Los Angeles. She will be responsible for fund raising, overall administration and securing a new facility for the museum. Thompson was formerly executive director for the MusiCares Foundation.

Real Estate

Scott D. Mayer was promoted to chief operating officer at Wilton Partners in Los Angeles. He will be responsible for day-to-day corporate operations and interoffice communications, and will supervise the development and acquisition of new properties. Mayer is also general counsel for the firm.
