The Los Angeles Business Journal for the third year in a row has been named one of the best business weeklies in the country by the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

It marks the first time a business weekly has won the award in three consecutive years.

A total of 246 entries were submitted by daily newspapers, weeklies, wire services and online sites participating in this year’s SABEW awards program, which recognizes the best business journalism in 1999.

In their assessment of the Los Angeles Business Journal, the judges wrote: “L.A. Business Journal covers the entertainment industry and the movers and shakers without pandering to them. It showed courage in doing a cover story on poverty in a very wealthy area. The judges especially liked the journal’s conversational tone, and its creativity. The front page is always a grabber, and usually sexy.”

The three other weeklies receiving SABEW’s “best in business” award this year were the Denver Business Journal, Atlanta Business Chronicle and Washington Business Journal.

Among big dailies with average circulation of 350,001 or more, the Los Angeles Times, Boston Globe and Dallas Morning News were named as the papers having the best overall business coverage.

Awards will be presented April 30 at the Sheraton Colony Square Hotel in Atlanta.
