Paper Only Appeals to New Immigrants

In regard to the Advertising & P.R. column (“Underachieving Spanish Daily Paper to Get a Boost,” Sept. 20): When I was growing up, I used to read La Opinion to know about current events in Mexico. It seemed exciting to be in touch with my “Mexican side.” But as I matured over the years and became more interested in events affecting my neighborhood, I turned to the L.A. Times.

Why would I turn to La Opinion to read about the police corruption scandal, or the Belmont complex scandal, etc., when I can get the full story in the L.A. Times, maybe even for free through the L.A. Times Web site?

La Opinion appeals to recent Mexican and Latino immigrants. Despite its new home-delivery plans, I don’t see La Opinion reaching the more “upscale” Latinos who are probably the only ones with the credit cards and checking accounts, and who can afford the subscription rates anyway.
