Background: Born in Israel, educated in Geneva and London. Veteran of Israel-Arab Six Day War and Yom Kippur War. Began producing movies in his early 30s with “Black Joy.” Later did “Once Upon a Time in America” and “Pretty Woman” before setting up New Regency Productions Inc., of which he remains controlling stakeholder. Quickly established track record with critically acclaimed films, including “JFK” and more recently, “L.A. Confidential” and “A Time to Kill.” Set up Regency Vision, a division run by daughters Elinor and Alexandra, to produce smaller art-house movies.

Money Track: New Regency is owned by Monarch B.V., a Dutch holding company in which Milchan has a 50 percent stake. Last year, Fox paid $200 million for a 20 percent share of the company, putting total value at the time at $1 billion. Monarch also owns a 25 percent share in Puma AG Rudolf Dassler Sport, a German manufacturer of sports merchandise.

Buzz: Has been linked to an Arnold Schwarzenegger project, “Crusades,” with Paul Verhoeven as director. The costume drama was dropped earlier by Warner Bros. when the initial budget reached $114 million. Has bet heavily on Hollywood appeal of Martina Hingis and Venus Williams by paying Women’s Tennis Association $120 million for world television rights to the women’s tour. Reportedly has hired designers to dress players and intends to market women’s tennis as complete entertainment package.
