Blame the Council

In regard to the article “Why Riordan’s Tax Plan Fell Apart” (March 8), if there is to be any falling apart of the mayor’s city business tax reform proposal, it will not be the fault of the meaningful reform penned by Mayor Riordan and council members Alatorre and Feuer, but rather by this City Council should it fail to codify the reform immediately.

The business tax reform proposal brings the business community tax simplification, overall business tax relief, business tax exemption for start-up businesses, increased compliance for generating tax revenue, and provides a business advisory group to oversee city tax reform.

The Central City Association, Latin Business Association, Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the Valley Industry and Commerce Association applaud the efforts of the mayor and council members in creating a simpler and fair tax system, and urge the council to finalize the tax reform proposal no later than May 14 so business can take advantage of the plan’s overall tax relief benefits for fiscal year filing in 1999.

Simply put, Los Angeles needs to be a more business-friendly city and the proposed city business tax reform is a very important and necessary first step.
