LABJ FORUM Worried About Y2K?

0

The sky is falling or is it? On Jan. 1, we’ll know whether Y2K was truly a major problem or just media hooey. Meanwhile, the Business Journal asks:

What’s your take on millennial hysteria?

Jean-Marie Horvat

Mixer/Producer

If the good Lord above wants to cast Armageddon down on us, then so be it. I think people are afraid, but a good business person takes risks. We’re opening a new studio in January, so we just bought all new equipment, like computers and consoles. We made sure the new console is Y2K-ready. The computer thing is just a number. I think the financial part is more what people are worried about.

I’m not worried. We’ve known this is coming for a hundred years. I really think we’re more prepared than we think we are. My mom in New York is recommending that I take money out of the bank and stock up on water, but I just don’t buy into that. I’m going to be out on Long Island for New Year’s, so I’ll be flying back here on Jan. 4. I have no reservations about traveling at that time. It’s all hype.

Jeff Lee

Lee Homes

I think our computer systems will be fine. I don’t really have any fears for the business. We use so much hands-on labor to build our product that I don’t think it’s going to be a problem. The biggest thing that I’m worried about is getting people moved into their homes, with the gas and electric turned on, by the holidays. There’s a shortage of skilled labor, so it’s tough to keep on schedule.

Chanel Landreaux

Marketing Coordinator

MCA Records

I don’t think everything’s going to hell in a hand basket, but I’ve got some bottles of water and canned goods just in case. I’ll basically be using my earthquake kit as a Y2K kit. I’m trying to be optimistic. I’m confident that with all the computer technology we have, it’s in our best interest to have everything function.

Eugenia Marrone

Merchandising Account Executive

The Regan Group

I pretty much think it’s all noise. I’ve been assured by everybody that everything banks, phones, whatever will be fine. I’m going to trust their guarantees. I’m going to stay in for New Year’s, but that’s more because I think it’s a time to be with the people you love. Besides, I don’t want to pay the extra money they’re charging on New Year’s just because of the millennium.

John Scheer

Visual Effects Artist

525 Studios

I’m counting on (problems)! It’s the New Year, and I want all the time off I can get. The news media keeps hyping it up, but I just don’t care. All the whole millennium thing means is that we’ve gone around the sun 2,000 times since we started keeping track of that sort of thing. I think it’s just a good excuse for people to go out and get drunk.
