Stop the Gobbling

Regarding your March 16 editorial “Ballona Misspeak,” the LABJ misses the point.

You write that “when considering development, today’s realities must be considered, not yesterday’s.” How true. Today, Los Angeles is faced with a severe shortage of open space and parkland. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to preserve a significant amount of open space for future generations, land with unfettered views of the mountains, ocean and skyline.

With so much industrial space requiring redevelopment, why choose an area with so much open space potential? The truth of the matter is that government officials at all levels need to recognize special opportunities when they arise and seek long-term funding for acquisitions such as this. If we consider the future, the value of that land as open space will greatly outweigh any advantage a few hundred homes or another office development will provide.

The LABJ is rightly concerned about the future of Los Angeles’s business environment. But quality-of-life issues ultimately will be the true test of our economic success. The answer to the Ballona Wetlands development issue lies in redevelopment of our industrial areas not in gobbling up more open space.
