If there is a common thread running through the industry forecasts for the coming year, it is lingering unease over the economic troubles in Asia.

Los Angeles has increasingly become a capital of Pacific Rim commerce, and while most industries here enjoyed robust gains in 1997, there is concern that the dropoff in Asia will send some L.A. businesses falling as well.

And it isn’t just international trade that is likely to be affected. Advertising, entertainment, financial services, apparel and other major L.A. industries are all tied to an ever-increasing degree to Asian markets.

Despite the anxiety, most analysts expect the regional recovery to continue here if not quite at the pace enjoyed over the past year.

Following is a sector-by-sector breakdown of the outlook for Los Angeles business in 1998.
