Anderson originally planned to follow in the footsteps of his father, eventually taking over his Minneapolis barbershop. His father, however, encouraged Anderson to go on to college, and Anderson chose UCLA partially to join the university’s hockey team.

After receiving his degree in business administration, Anderson left California in 1940 to attend the MBA program at Harvard Business School. While serving in the Navy during World War II, Anderson studied for the CPA exam, taking and passing the exam while on leave.

After returning from the war, Anderson enrolled in night courses at Loyola Law School, and during the day worked at Arthur Andersen & Co. and taught CPA review at UCLA.

After graduating from Loyola, Anderson, with fellow Loyola graduate James Kindel, formed Kindel & Anderson, a law firm that at its peak employed 96 attorneys. Eventually he transitioned out of the firm to pursue other business ventures.
