Charles Drew University
Under Carlisle’s reign, Charles Drew University was awarded a $75 million grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Greenwood Initiative in 2024. It is one of four historically Black colleges and universities to receive the funding. Carlisle was appointed as the president and chief executive of the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science, a historically Black college in Los Angeles, in 2011. As a longtime academic, Carlisle graduated from Wesleyan University where he studied chemistry, then received his medical degree at Brown University before pursuing his master’s in public health and doctorate in health services research from the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. He spent 31 years at UCLA, becoming a tenured associate professor in 1998. Throughout his career, he published articles on the quality of care of medical professionals, health policy, diversity in medical education and critiques on health disparities.
