THE LATEST: Under Yortsos’ leadership, USC opened the Baum Family Maker Space last fall in the school’s Science and Engineering Library. The space will serve as a hands-on design and fabrication center for engineering students, with a machine shop, a wet lab, a 3D shop, laser cutters, workbenches and other tools. The area will also showcase the work of USC Viterbi students and competition teams.

BACKGROUND: Yortsos has been with the university since 1978, when he joined the faculty of the chemical engineering department, which he later chaired. In addition to serving as dean of the Viterbi School of Engineering, he is the Zohrab Kaprielian chairman in engineering.

WORTH NOTING: Yortsos is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has served on the American Society for Engineering Education’s Diversity Committee of the Engineering Deans Council. In 2017, the USC Viterbi School of Engineering received ASEE President’s Award.
