SEAN K. SMITH

President and Chief Executive

Keenan

Sean Smith is president and chief executive at Keenan, succeeding company founder and chairman John Keenan in 2000. The company has tripled annual revenue under Smith’s leadership. He is currently leading the company’s planned expansion into nationwide markets with a focus on pharmacy care and benefits management. Smith has also introduced several company-wide corporate social responsibility initiatives, including Impact Day, during which all employees participate in service projects; the Right Start Mentoring program; and Everyday Kindness, a system to promote kindness and positive change in California schools. Smith, who has 35 years of industry experience, joined Keenan in 1989 after stints at Anthem Blue Cross and Prudential Insurance Company.

What was your proudest moment?

I actually have an annual proudest moment. Each year we have an “Impact Day” which is a day of service for all our employees. We all get together and work on projects that benefit the local communities. We fill backpacks for students, stuff animals for kids in shelters, and a couple of years ago I helped sand an iron fence at Colin Powell Academy. Whatever the project, I see John Keenan’s vision for the company reflected in the actions of all our employees on Impact Day. It is a reminder that we make a difference in our communities and in each other’s lives – that is something to be proud of.

What is your alma mater?

University of Redlands

What is your next project?

I’m focusing on continuing to grow Keenan and expand the brand nationally through our partnership with AssuredPartners. We have some new and exciting opportunities to bring solutions to schools, municipalities and hospitals across the country.

Who is your hero?

My hero is my grandmother. She taught me about social responsibility not just through her words, but through her actions. She was committed to her church and helping people, especially the elderly. She made a difference to those around her and I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for her.

What do you like best about Los Angeles?

What I like best about L.A. is the diversity in everything. There is diversity in people, cultures, food, activities… it is a place where everyone belongs and everyone fits.
