Film shooting days were down in the second quarter in Los Angeles and a few surrounding cities, according to a report released July 18.

There was a 5.2 percent drop in film shooting days to 8,978 total days compared to the second quarter of 2017, according to a study from FilmLA, the film office for the city of Los Angeles.

FilmLA’s numbers come from the permits it collects. Any movie, television, commercial or other film project seeking a shoot permit in Los Angeles must go to Film LA, and the outfit additionally administers permits for several cities in the county including Santa Monica.

The drop in shoot days were partly due to a 31 percent plunge in days of reality television shoots and also drops in student and experimental films.

Feature films, by contrast, had 11 percent more shoot days in the second quarter of 2018 compared to the year before.

Film shoot production days peaked in 2016, according to the study.
