DLA Piper announced Monday the hiring of California Sen. Kamala Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff, previously West Coast managing partner for Venable.

Emhoff assumes a partnership role at DLA and will split time between the firm’s offices in Century City and Washington, D.C. He will represent clients in industries including media and entertainment, digital media, sports, advertising, technology, hospitality and character licensing, DLA said in a press release.

“Doug has served as litigation counsel and trusted advisor for some of the biggest names in Hollywood and across the entertainment, media and sports spectrum,” Roger Meltzer, DLA Piper’s global co-chairman and co-chairman for the Americas, said in a statement. “His arrival is an important strategic move for us not just in Southern California, but for our wider global sector capabilities.”

DLA pitched the hire of Emhoff in a press release as part of its efforts to expand its operations in Southern California. The firm announced in June its merger with Liner of Westwood and downtown Los Angeles, a boutique law firm that focused on media and entertainment, litigation, real estate, business transactions and restructuring.
