Alec Gores became the first member of his family to graduate college, with a computer science degree from Western Michigan University. He went from selling computers out of his parents’ basement under the banner Executive Business Systems to selling companies. Since 1987, Gores Group has bought, fixed, and sold more than 80 businesses. Its portfolio includes more than 20 active companies worldwide with combined revenues exceeding $7 billion.

Industry specialization: Technology, industrial, health care, and business services.

Deal value range: From $100 million to $3 billion.

Recent transactions: Led the $725 million equity investment in Hostess Brands, which was taken public; sold Therakos, a biopharmaceutical company specializing in immune cell therapy, for $1.33 billion; sold Hay Group (Germany), which produces forged and machined steel auto parts, to MSI (Japan); and sold Etrali Trading Systems (France) to IPC Systems.
