Honest Co. co-founder Brian Lee has stepped down from his role as chief executive of the nontoxic household goods company

He has been replaced by Nick Vlahos, who previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer of Oakland’s Clorox Co. Lee will continue as an Honest Co. board member and act as an adviser going forward.

“With our strategic shift from e-commerce to omnichannel brand underway, this is the perfect time to welcome Nick Vlahos as the new CEO of the Honest Co.,” said Jessica Alba, Honest’s co-founder and chairwoman, in a statement.

While at Clorox, Vlahos focused his efforts on the company’s household and lifestyle brands, including Burt’s Bees, Brita, and Green Works.

Lee’s exit from Honest comes after talks to sell the company to London-based Unilever in September fell through following the consumer goods giant’s decision to acquire Seventh Generation, a Burlington, Vt., maker of plant-based cleaning products.

Honest was co-founded in 2011 by Lee, Alba, Christopher Gavigan, and Sean Kane. The company said in a press release that it generated more than $300 million in sales last year.

Lee previously co-founded Glendale’s LegalZoom.com Inc. in 2001 as well as El Segundo-based ShoeDazzle.com Inc., which was acquired by TechStyle Fashion Group, also of El Segundo, in 2013.
