THE BUZZ: Inherited 43 percent of family business after father, Nathan Shapell, died in 2007. Shapell, born in Poland, survived two Nazi concentration camps with brother David and brother-in-law Max Webb. Trio co-founded Beverly Hills development company Shapell in 1955 and built about 70,000 homes and 7,000 apartments along California coast. Guerin sits on board of what remains of company but puts more time into philanthropy for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she serves as chairwoman. She and husband, Paul, donated $20 million to hospital in 2013 to establish congenital heart program and endow academic chairs in pulmonary medicine and pediatric neurosurgery. Paul and Vera Guerin Family Foundation helped fund study in July that revealed connections between high-grade brain tumors and particular family of genes. Guerin Family Pavilion at Skirball Cultural Center opened in 2013.
