THE BUZZ: Gained control of fresh-fruit company Dole in 1985; took once publicly traded company private three years ago in leveraged buyout. Several shareholders cried foul and filed lawsuit accusing billionaire of fraudulently driving Westlake Village company’s stock down to buy it at cheaper price. Judge ordered Murdock and former Dole chief operating officer to reimburse other shareholders $148 million last summer. Murdock still donates $15 million a year to 350-acre North Carolina Research Campus in Kannapolis, N.C., which specializes in health and nutrition research. Major shareholder of San Diego cancer drug developer NovaRX Corp., where son Justin is chief executive. The 93-year-old said he plans to live until 125 by avoiding vitamins and supplements, opting for diet of fruits, vegetables, and nuts. High school dropout, who was even briefly homeless, made early living investing in real estate.
