Barbie: You Can Stop Talking About My Body, Now

Barbie, long criticized for her perfect figure, is putting on weight – and coming in several more diverse versions.

Mattel Inc., the El Segundo maker of Barbie, said Thursday it will begin selling the iconic doll in “curvy,” tall, and petite body types, according to The Daily News.

Barbie will also be available in seven skin tones, 22 eye colors and 24 hairstyles. The broadened range of dolls was launched after years of criticism that Barbie had created unrealistic expectations for girls and women.

Senior Vice President and Barbie Global General Manager Evelyn Mazzocco pointed out that the changes and additions, “represent a line that is more reflective of the world girls see around them.”

While Mattel will continue to sell the original Barbie, her sisters with the new bodies are available for preorder and will arrive on U.S. store shelves in March. They will roll out in the rest of the world after that.
