While the Chargers are still in San Diego, the team took another step toward a move to Los Angeles. The team has filed to trademark the names “Los Angeles Chargers” and “LA Chargers,” the Los Angeles Times reported.

The team filed paperwork with the U.S. Patent Office two days after NFL owners approved a one-year option for the relocation of the Chargers to Los Angeles as part of a 30-2 vote approving the St. Louis Rams’ own move to the city.

ESPN.com reported Wednesday that the Chargers were given the first right to negotiate to move into the Rams stadium in Inglewood, which will be ready for the 2019 season.

The trademark filings seek to own rights to the phrases on everything from football helmets to jewelry, toys to Christmas ornaments.
