Story of Boy Meeting Girl A Real Treat

Call it sweet romance.

When food writer Jason Kessler and food stylist Hannah Canvasser fell in love after meeting on the production of a Cooking Channel show, they moved in together and gave birth to a frozen pudding company.

“It took me a long time to find a Jewish girl out here who loved food,” said Kessler.

The couple credits the inspiration for their company to Eddie Murphy, or “Beverly Hills Cop,” to be exact. They went to an outdoor screening of the film in May, for which Canvasser, who’s also a trained chef, prepared a picnic including a massive bowl of Southern banana pudding. Rather than throw out the excess, they froze what was left over as an experiment.

“The flavor was perfect but the texture was awful,” Kessler said of the result.

So the pair tweaked the process, added homemade vanilla wafers to the banana flavor and launched El Segundo’s Little Spoon Frozen Pudding in the fall. The company also offers additional flavors such as caramel latte and campfire chocolate.

Four-ounce cups with wooden spoons retail from $4.50 a serving and are sold at downtown L.A. market Urban Radish.

The couple has also been busy catering, rolling their blue and white ice-cream cart to Snapchat’s Marina del Rey offices and to the set of Fox TV show “The Mindy Project.”

Kessler likened their experience launching the business to having a newborn.

“We look forward to that baby allowing us to purchase a pudding palace in the future,” he said.
