New Venues Folded Into Yoga Classes

Yoga enthusiasts in Los Angeles now have the option of a whole new kind of class.

Instead of doing their downward-facing dog and corpse pose in a studio, they can put their mats down in nightclubs and art galleries. Then after their exercise, they can socialize over drinks and snacks with fellow students.

It’s an idea just introduced to Los Angeles by Washington, D.C., company Grip the Mat, which offers special classes in a range of locations.

A class called Vinyasa to Vino offers wine-tasting after the yoga session, while Bendy Brunch provides a spread of food. For Soul and Spirits, students work out to the beats of electronic and hip-hop music, then get served cocktails made from fresh juices.

Yoga teachers Christy Skarulis and Ashley Braun, both 24, co-founded the company in 2014 after ditching unsatisfying 9-to-5 office jobs. Their goal is to help build communities through exercise.

“After yoga, you’re in an elevated space, you’re feeling good and it’s the perfect place to meet others,” said Skarulis, who just moved to Los Angeles to oversee the company’s launch here.

Classes cost between $25 and $40, and Grip the Mat also counts on sponsorships with food and beverage companies to help keep prices low for the target audience of young professionals who want to meet people outside of the office – and squeeze in a workout, too.

“It’s tough to juggle everything in a big city with a 40- to 50-hour workweek,” said Braun.

The next L.A. event will be Vinyasa to Vino on March 30 at C.A.V.E. Gallery in Venice.
