A News App for Millennials

A mobile news app for millennials has launched, its founders announced on Friday. The app, called Tumbleweed, features curated news that users can edit and share with a combination of virtual stickers and text.

“We’ve found in our research that millennials typically on the younger side want to be completely informed,” said Cisco Adler, Tumbleweed’s co-founder. “They’re intelligent and intuitive but they don’t necessarily have the time to dive into a longer news article.” The other co-founder is entrepreneur Shaun Neff. The company is in Malibu.

The app, which condenses breaking news into a bite that disappears from a news feed in 24 hours, was downloaded thousands of times by Friday afternoon, the company said.

“It’s been crazy to watch, just in the day of launch, just to see people sharing these and starting conversations has been wild. The potential has been larger than we thought,” Adler said.

The company is backed by John Maloney, the former president of Tumblr, and Jimmy Iovine, a record executive and co-founder of Beats Electronics, among other prominent investors.

“The names behind continue to get bigger,” Adler said. “John was one of the first maybe four people to see the app, and he was completely in love with it.”

For now, the company’s revenue model will be based on sticker packs that will sell for approximately $1.99, in addition to sponsor postings.
