West L.A. law firm Manatt Phelps & Phillips was crowned Monday as the 2016 “law firm of the year” for music law by U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers.

Manatt, founded in 1965, is the only firm based in Los Angeles to be named a law firm of the year. The annual report awards firms with the top honor in 74 categories based on national practice areas.

Monday’s announcement marks the second time Manatt has taken the top honor in the music law category since U.S. News began recognizing the practice area five years ago.

“It is an honor to have received this recognition for the second time since 2014,” Gary Gilbert, co-chair of the firm’s entertainment and media practice, said in a statement. “With client and peer evaluations at the center of the ranking, it is a reflection of the exceptional and impactful industry work our music lawyers are doing across the country.”

The awards are based on a collection of client and lawyer evaluations, peer reviews from top attorneys in each field and other information provided by law firms, according to U.S. News & World Report.

The firm was not immediately available for further comment Monday.
