LAX’s Slurpee Runneth Over

Can’t wait for your next Slurpee or Big Gulp drink? Soon, you will finally be able to quench that thirst at Los Angeles International Airport.

The first-ever 7-Eleven store inside an airport in the United States is set to open in a few weeks at the Tom Bradley International Terminal. It will be the first store in a new retail area on the arrival level outside the security screening perimeter – which means it will be accessible to all airport visitors and workers (but that travelers will have to finish off their Big Gulps and Slurpees before going through security).

The 950-square-foot store is the product of a joint effort by terminal concessions operator LS travel retail North America of Toronto and terminal retail consultant Westfield Group of Los Angeles.

Passengers and those waiting to pick them up will now be able to order all the Slurpees, nachos, sandwiches and other typical 7-Eleven fare and convenience items they want. Until now, airport retailer Hudson Group of East Rutherford, N.J., had a lock on much of the terminal convenience store segment.

Any new handiness that results from the store won’t be just for passengers. Thousands of airport employees have been faced with the same limited convenience store options. If they craved a Slurpee or hot dog, they’ve had to go offsite.

“We are confident this 7-Eleven concept will enhance the experience of arriving travelers, the throngs of people who wait to meet and greet them, and thousands of LAX employees,” said Keith Kaplan, vice president of development for Westfield.
