Guess, Kite Pharma Among This Week’s Movers

The Los Angeles Business Journal’s index of the largest local public companies rose for the week. The weighted LABJ index rose 2 percent to close at 240, with gainers outnumbering losers 97 to 53. Six companies closed the week unchanged.

Among stocks trading above a dollar, Santa Monica’s Kite Pharma Inc., a cancer drug developer, was the week’s top gainer. Shares rose 14 percent to close at $73.17 Friday. The company recently announced it had partnered with the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society to develop a drug that will be used to treat patients with aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Downtown L.A. jeans maker Guess Inc. was another big gainer this week. Shares rose 11 percent to close Friday at $22.78 after the company announced this week that co-founder and Chief Executive Paul Marciano will be replaced as CEO next month by Victor Herrero, managing director for Asia at the Spanish clothing company Inditex Group, which holds big name brands such as Zara.

Los Angeles oil company Breitburn Energy Partners was among the week’s losing stocks. Shares fell 20 percent for the week, closing at $3.35, as crude prices continued their July slump.
