Garcetti Calls for Net Neutrality

Eric Garcetti has thrown one more jab in the country’s net neutrality fight.

The Los Angeles mayor penned a Re/code op-ed Wednesday, calling for the Federal Communications Commission to vote in support of a net neutrality proposal that would increase regulations on Internet service providers and prevent them from slowing or blocking data based on preference or paid prioritization.

The Internet, Garcetti said, has worked well with “self-defined rules” since the first digital message was sent from a UCLA computer in 1969. Garcetti also emphasized the importance of an open Internet for L.A. tech companies such as Snapchat, Dollar Shave Club and Factual to continue innovating and driving the region’s economy.

“We need to ensure that the original rules of neutrality and openness remain in place as we increasingly see access to the Internet controlled by fewer and fewer entities,” Garcetti said.

However, those opposed to so-called net neutrality point out that the Internet has boomed without much government involvement. Regulation, especially if it is too heavy and restrictive, would throttle innovation.

The net neutrality plan, proposed by FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler, is expected to be approved on Thursday.
