A 34-year-old slice of cake from the wedding of Princess Diana and Prince Charles sold for $1,375 at Nate D. Sander’s Auctions in Los Angeles on Thursday.

The slice of classic British fruitcake with cream cheese frosting, dates from the royal couple’s reception on July 29, 1981 at Buckingham Palace.

“Collectors really cherish these now because it was one of the great weddings of the 20th century,” said Sam Heller, a spokesman for the auction house. “Even though it is still edible, people just want to have a piece of this cake to collect, they want to have a part of Princess Diana’s wedding.”

He noted that many of the slices were eaten by the reception’s 120 guests, so the remaining pieces had become a novelty. This slice, which was wrapped in original doilies with a card reading, ”With best wishes from Their Royal Highnesses,” was sold in an online auction to an unidentified buyer.

“Royal food is very rare,” Heller said.

The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer was a huge international television event.
