THE MONEY: Majority owner of Century City investment firm Kayne Anderson Capital Advisers, which has seen assets under management grow in recent years to top $25 billion. Firm invests heavily in operators of oil and natural gas pipelines as well as companies that build infrastructure for the oil business, but also invests in tech companies and offers mezzanine debt. Owns at least half of firm, co-founded in 1984 and now worth just shy of $2 billion. Other assets include stock in Houston pipeline company Plains All American Pipeline, yacht, Santa Monica mansion and beachfront property in New Zealand.

BUZZ: New to list, but Kayne well-known name around town. He and John Anderson put up initial capital for Kayne Anderson in early ’80s. Kayne told Business Journal that Anderson never actively involved in firm’s operations, but gave it “instant credibility.” Over past few years, he and wife, Suzanne, have popped up in various media reports that offer hints of great wealth and detail a taste for the finer things. Told New York Times he’d commissioned artist James Turrell to build a “skyspace” in backyard. Couple donated $5 million in October to his alma mater, UCLA Anderson School of Management. In June issue of W Magazine, his three adult daughters spilled beans about family jet and yacht – named SuRi, for Suzanne and Ric. In 2012, purchased 570 acres of beachfront property north of Auckland, New Zealand, where they plan to build top-tier golf course. Their Santa Monica home backs up on Riviera Country Club, where he’s a member. He’s pals with fellow billionaire Howard Marks, who occasionally quotes Kayne in his widely read memos.
