Uber, the San Francisco ridesharing service, launched a new, lower-priced option today for Los Angeles customers seeking a ride in a larger vehicle.

L.A. customers can now order a ride using company’s UberXL service, which offers rides in larger vehicles such as Toyota Highlanders, Honda Pilots and Kia Sorentos, as well as minivans. The service is meant to be a lower-cost alternative to its SUV option. Both services can accommodate up to six riders, but UberXL fares will be 60 percent cheaper than its sport-utility service.

The company said UberXL drivers will also earn 30 percent more per trip.

Base fare for UberXL passengers will be $3, compared to $1.61 for its base UberX customers, who are typically driven in a Toyota Prius. Cost per mile in UberXL cars will be $1.85, compared to $1.25 with UberX.

The service will have limited availability outside of Los Angeles.
