Two Los Angeles Business Journal reporters have been recognized with top honors from the Society of American Business Editors and Writers.

James Rufus Koren won the top award in the Breaking News category for “Amazon Expands Delivery Service.” He was the first to report that the Seattle retailer was bringing its Amazon Fresh service to Los Angeles and signing up local shops that wanted Amazon to deliver for them.

The judges said Koren “demonstrated great reporting instincts” and produced an article with “intense regional interest and national relevance” that was “detailed, thorough, and an engaging read.”

Alfred Lee won the top award in the investigative category for “Developer Money Crosses the Lines?,” an article that showed some local projects bankrolled under the EB-5 program got preferential treatment because they were in gerrymandered districts that allowed them to be considered in high-unemployment areas when they actually were in affluent areas such as Marina del Rey. Lee has done several articles about problems with the EB-5 program, in which foreign investors and their families can get green cards in exchange for investing in job-creating projects in the United States.

The judges said it was “clear-cut, watchdog-style impactful journalism” that was “clearly written.”

The Business Journal competed in a category for weekly newspapers. The only other L.A. publication to win Sabew awards was the Los Angeles Times, with four top honors. It competed in the daily newspaper category.

The top honors are especially noteworthy this year because in the past the organization named three winners in each category but this year announced a single winner for each.

The awards will be presented March 29 at the Sheraton Phoenix Hotel in Phoenix, at the annual conference of the organization, which is based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University. Speakers will include author Michael Lewis.
