Should Malibu place restrictions on chain stores in the city?

My family and I enjoy visiting friends in Malibu and experiencing its sheer natural beauty that is admired by the whole world. It would be a real shame to overbuild and ruin that area with chain stores. In fact, I live in an area that has mostly charming mom-and-pop shops that increases the livability quotient significantly for us.

Any high-quality business that makes an effort to blend into the community is likely to enjoy great success; therefore, it is not necessary for the city to implement additional restrictions.

I think that Malibu should absolutely place restrictions on chain stores and restaurants. There are so few places left in the world that foster and encourage small businesses not to mention that it adds to the charm, appeal and experience of Malibu as a whole.

Residents have paid top dollar to live in an area that has a certain character. In exchange, they give up certain conveniences. If that means driving out of town to get to Wal-Mart or Home Depot, they have freely made that lifestyle choice and should be respected.

I believe that a good balance can and should be maintained. It is important to support our local businesses and make sure they can thrive, but along with that some carefully chosen chain stores can bring traffic and up the shopping prestige of any area.
