Is This City Falling Apart?

Are you concerned about L.A.’s infrastructure?

Beth Holden

Yes, I am concerned with L.A.’s infrastructure. On the street level, I have seen potholes on Foothill Drive repaired several times over the last several years, the problem persists, because the root of the problem is not being addressed. Cosmetic infrastructure repair will only end in failure.

The recent rupturing of the waterline near UCLA helped draw attention to city utilities and away from the “other” infrastructure problem, traffic, but I’m not sure either problem is easy to fix. As for preventative maintenance, I’m all for a reasonable amount of it.

I’m very concerned. City budgets prioritize pensions for retired public employees over infrastructure maintenance and construction. It’s the equivalent of taking expensive vacations while letting the house fall apart.

RICHARD LICHTENSTEIN

I’m very concerned. The mayor has made it clear that this is not the last sinkhole we’re going to see. Since the decision has been made not to raise rates, we must find a creative, cooperative way to pay for these necessary upgrades.

I’m very concerned. It’s financially prudent to tackle this now because deferring maintenance will be even more expensive. There is a hidden cost to poor infrastructure, it impedes our trucks and other commerce-delivering vehicles and thus hurts our economy.

I am very concerned about the state of Los Angeles’ infrastructure. The aura of a world-class city is measured by how well its infrastructure is maintained. Whether it’s the state of sidewalks or the underground utilities systems, upgrades and maintenance are much more costly than the initial capital expenditures and as important.
