A Little Room for Art

Tif Sigfrids always wanted her own art shop, and finally opened a gallery two weeks ago in Hollywood. But she surprised everyone with her first exhibition. She is displaying six teeny portraits by artist Joe Sola. They are so small, in fact, they are displayed in Sigfrids’ ear.

The portraits were mounted inside a tiny white-box gallery space, which was created by the artist to fit like a plug in Sigfrids’ right ear.

The gallery – the life-size one, that is – is almost empty, and when visitors come in, she walks up and shows them the art in her ear. Since the opening, Sigfrids has already talked to hundreds of people.

“It’s interesting that it breaks down some relationships dealers have with visitors,” she said. “When visitors come into a gallery, oftentimes they are ignored. Sometimes there is a line that separates the two sides. In this case, all those boundaries are broken down.”

Sigfrids, 32, has worked in the art world for 11 years and is the former director of Thomas Solomon Gallery in Chinatown. She occasionally held little exhibitions around her workplace. Sola liked the idea of art shows in unusual places and once joked, “I’ll put an exhibition in your ear.”

She took him up on it, but it took him some time to do. He whittled down the smallest acupuncture needle he could get and painted using a microscope.

Sporting Chance

Los Angeles Dodgers fans are notorious for arriving late to games, but Fox Sports executive Karen Brodkin had a good excuse. At a board meeting of the Los Angeles Sports Council on Oct. 16, she was elected chairwoman of the organization. Outgoing Chairman Alan Rothenberg vacated his seat and Brodkin, 48, took over on the spot.

“He immediately handed over the microphone and switched seats with me,” she said.

The lunchtime meeting, which was scheduled months in advance, caused her to arrive late to Game 5 of the National League Championship Series, which started at 1 p.m. The board meeting was held at the law firm of Latham & Watkins in downtown Los Angeles.

Brodkin said she did not rush through business and she insisted on staying to the end of the meeting. But she did have to hurry to make it to the playoff game.

“I took a cab and made it by the end of the second inning,” she said. “I’ve discovered that a cab is the best way to get to the stadium from downtown.”
