Music to The Ears of Wine Lovers

For all the wine that flows at hillside picnics at the Hollywood Bowl, a bar where concertgoers could stop to sit and grab a goblet before the show was never in the score. Not until recently, anyway.

Patina Restaurant Group, a downtown L.A. hospitality company that oversees all the food and beverage operations for the Hollywood Bowl, is scheduled to open a wine bar at the outdoor music venue June 22. The bar is expected to make its debut in concert with the season’s opening show for the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Joachim Splichal, chef and Patina founder, said the wine bar will give music enthusiasts a reason to show up a little earlier.

“It’s very different from all the other offerings we have at the Hollywood Bowl,” he said. “The location will be a good meeting place for people before a show.”

In past concert seasons, wine was sold by the glass at concession kiosks and tableside at the venue’s full-service Rooftop Grill steakhouse. It was sold by the bottle in catered picnic baskets and at the venue’s food shop, Marketplace.

The Wine Bar, financed by the Philharmonic, will carry eight draft beers and 25 wines by the glass, in addition to a wide variety of bottled wines.

“I think it will be very successful,” Splichal said.
