Credit union chief executives have good days and bad. Michael Mastro runs Los Angeles Firemen’s Credit Union in Los Angeles. His worst day? Sept. 11, 2001, when his clients lost many fellow firefighters at the World Trade Center. At a previous job, G. Michael Padgett’s credit union had a bad day when his branch was taken over by robbers. He’s not worried about that happening now, because he heads the Los Angeles Police Federal Credit Union in Van Nuys. “What robber would be dumb enough to enter a lobby full of police uniforms?” he asks. In this Special Report, we look at Who’s Who among L.A.’s biggest credit unions, and they talk about their bad days – such as dealing with new regulations – and their good days, such as when they can help members meet their needs.
