Executive V.P., Director of Research, investment firm Quincy Cass Associates

How many hours a week do you work?

Forty or more.

Why not retire?

It is far more fun and enjoyable to work in a profession that I love than be retired. One of my greatest enjoyments in life is building investment portfolios that satisfy my clients’ objectives. In addition, working in the investment field is engaging, a constant challenge and an adrenaline rush. Working also makes me appreciate my Saturdays off, especially in the fall when I participate as an alumni yell leader on the field for all of the UCLA home football games. The word “retirement” is from some foreign language. When I awaken in the morning, I look forward to going to work each day and I am grateful that I have retained my health to do so. Retirement is not on my life’s wish list.

Best part of working past 80?

Utilizing all of the professional skills and knowledge level I have acquired through the years of my experience. It takes many years of experience to learn the economic cycles to begin to acquire successful skills at stock investing. It just seems like a waste to abandon that knowledge, skill and productivity that took so long to learn and master then become idle. My love of investing is an extremely valuable asset to my clients.

Worst?

There is no worst part. I suppose if I could change anything, it might be to be able to arise a little later than 3:15 a.m. and to have a shorter commute.

Are you up to date on technology?

Enough to operate successfully. I do use my computer for investing and research. I even have an iPad at home that I use constantly. I am using email more frequently with clients, but I still prefer my phone to speak with clients. I have not found use for social networking sites.

What’s the secret to staying healthy and active?

Choice of parents, older whiskey, faster horses and younger women.

Do you work as much as you used to in your 40s and 50s?

The same or more. I love what I do so I guess I don’t think of it as work.

How has your work routine changed?

It has not changed except I perhaps have more time to work. Having the opportunity and ability to go to work every day is very rewarding for me.

What do you miss the most about being young?

A more youthful body.

What do you see in the future?

Greater productivity in life’s activities, more accomplishments and building with many lifetime goals yet to be achieved.
