Making Call On Philanthropy

What good could come from an iPhone case made of solid gold?

In the case of the case made and marketed by Brikk, a portion of the proceeds from each sale will go to charity.

The company manufactures its products in downtown Los Angeles and sells them online, and in retail stores in Sydney and London. It plans to open a downtown store later this month.

Available in pink gold, yellow gold or platinum, the cases sell for as much as $14,235. Each gold case contains more than 75 grams of pure gold and each platinum case contains more than 100 grams of that metal.

Brikk said it would donate about $500 from each sale of its Haven iPhone cases toward the delivery of a metric ton of rice through a non-profit to people in such places as Somalia.

Cyrus Blacksmith, the company’s founder, said it has sold 10 Haven cases since introducing the product in February. He’s hoping the glitzy product will draw enough attention for other luxury retailers to take notice and adopt the profits-for-philanthropy model.

“The philosophy is mainly to be a case study for other luxury brands,” Blacksmith said. “The luxury market is a huge global market and it could do some serious good.”

And for an extra cost, diamonds can be added upon request.
